Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz aka the poor man’s Grange, the baby Grange, call it what you will but if $900-$1000 is a bit much to splash out on a bottle of Penfolds Grange then this is your wine! It gets this nickname as a part of the blend is aged in the same barrels used to age Grange.

A Cabernet Shiraz blend – the Cabernet gives it a good old fashioned firm backbone and the warm climate Shiraz gives it a rounded richness.

It rarely goes a vintage without getting wine buffs jumping out of their seats, this 2022 vintage is no different…

94/100 & Top Rank Award (Huon Hooke, The Real Review)
“Saturated purple colour, with smoky toasty oaky and barbecued meat aromas, lightly spiced, the shiraz component clearly visible here. It’s full-bodied and robust, solidly structured and firm-tannined, gripping at the finish. A solid Bin 389. (McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, Padthaway & Wrattonbully. 51% cabernet, 49% shiraz. Aged 12 months in American oak hogsheads, 36% new)”

95/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“Penfolds “Baby Grange” is in fine form for the 2022 release and, for me, sits at the confluence of both traditional and contemporary winemaking. Its cellaring track record is outstanding and I think this release will age beautifully thanks to its classic structure and impressive fruit depth. It’s all dark plum and berry with a sheen of mahogany, sweet oak spice, cigar lounge, milk chocolate, dried cranberry and pressed violets. Layered and filigreed with compact fine-grained tannins and a sense of grace and poise as it slowly sails off. It’s a ripper.”

As usual this iconic Penfolds Bin 389 wine has got massive cellaring potential of 15-20 years, a must for the collectors out there!
