It’s the home to some of Italy’s most flavoursome and best value reds, it’s picture perfect postcard stuff and it looks a lot like the heel of a boot when you look at it on a map – we’re talking about southern Italy, Puglia to be precise.
It’s where I Muri Negroamaro comes from, made by the Vigneti del Salento crew (who are part of the mammoth Farnese wine group in Italy).
Negroamaro is the grape and it’s one of the famous styles in this neck of the woods. It means “black bitter” in Italian – don’t let that put you off though. These wines are unbelievably good value – medium bodied, dry reds full of ripe, spicy black berry flavours. Not too tannic or acidic, high on the chug-factor…especially with meatballs!
Pronouncing Italian wine names can be a bit of a mouthful, but don’t let it put you off!
