They go a bit potty across the ditch every year when Wynns Coonawarra Estate launch their annual release of wines. They even called it ‘Wynnsday’, cheesy or what! The Coonawarra (Aboriginal for ‘honeysuckle’) is a region from South Australia famous for its world class Cabernet. Wynns were one of the first to plant the stuff in the Coonawarra.

Their Black Label range is the flash stuff. Age worthy wines crafted to last the test of time in your cellar, usually going for in the region of $30-40 a bottle. This is a stellar price for some seriously classy Aussie Cabernet!

This stunning 2020 vintage got a massive rating of 95/100 and a Top Ranking Award by The Real Review’s Stuart Knox. Clearly pretty blown away with this Cabernet, he said “Ink black core into a deep purple rim. Cassis, dry earth, graphite and dry tobacco aromatics. Medium to full-bodied with an intensity and concentration that is beautifully balanced by fine-grained tannins that drive the palate incredibly long. A seamless wine that will cellar for many years”

As if that wasn’t impressive enough it’s got a 95/100 score with James Halliday. “Here is an amazing trio of facts about Wynns: it has been releasing ‘Black Label’ wine since 1954, its quality has always been excellent, and it has somehow, in comparative terms, always represented good value. For decades, Wynns has been the backbone of most Australian wine collections thanks to its reliability and incredible cellaring performance. The 2020 vintage lives up to its own history quite beautifully. It’s medium bodied, as most of the best wines are. It rolls evenly through the palate, offering blackcurrant and mint, dark olive and (whispers of) tobacco. There’s a cool, alpine herb note in there too. Tannin structure and length are both impeccable, as is the overall quality. Cellar with confidence.”
