They go a bit potty across the ditch every year when Wynns Coonawarra Estate launch their annual release of wines – they even called it ‘Wynnsday’, cheesy or what! The Coonawarra (Aboriginal for ‘honeysuckle’) is a region from South Australia famous for its world class Cabernet, and Wynns were one of the first to plant the stuff in the Coonawarra.

Their Black Label range is the flash stuff. Age worthy wines crafted to last the test of time in your cellar and armed to the teeth with spicy, dark fruit flavours that’ll woo any old school Aussie red lover!

We’re seriously happy to see this label come back into stock after a few years hiatus on NZ shelves. This is the 2019 vintage Old Vines Shiraz using some fruit from their Undoolya vineyard planted in 1894, some fruit from their Johnson Block planted in 1925 as well as other old vineyards and blockshuon. The result is jaw dropping…

95/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“Some fruit comes off the Undoolya vineyard planted in 1894. This has slipped comfortably into a seamless wine. Supple, ripe fruit, lightly spiced with cedar, licorice root and cinnamon. The palate is fuller bodied but so restrained. The tannins are absurdly fine, with length like no tomorrow.”

95/100 (Andrew Caillard MW)
“A retro-modern style evoking the Coonawarra Claret styles of yesteryear and the refinements of modern viticulture and winemaking.”

93/100 (Huon Hooke, The Real Review)
“Very deep, intense red/purple colour. The bouquet is intensely spicy and red-fruited, fresh and young but also quite detailed for its tender age.”

How long we hear you ask? Well let’s say you could grab a case now and drink one each year until around 2040!
